When Should You Seek Treatment?
Consult a specialist if you have prominent leg veins with persistent pain or swelling, darkening or thickening of the skin around the ankle, a wound that is not healing, or a recurrent ulcer.
A painful, rapidly worsening or infected ulcer requires prompt medical assessment. Sudden leg swelling or chest pain with breathlessness requires urgent evaluation.

Questions about varicose veins & venous ulcers
Do I need a Doppler scan before treatment?
Usually, yes. A duplex venous Doppler scan shows which veins are leaking and how blood flows in the leg, and the treatment plan is based on it together with the clinical examination.
Can varicose veins come back after treatment?
They can. Treating the underlying venous reflux, and wearing compression when it is advised, lowers the chance. Your plan includes steps to prevent recurrence.
How long does a venous ulcer take to heal?
It varies with the size of the ulcer, how long it has been present, and other conditions such as diabetes or poor arterial circulation. Treating the vein problem as well as the wound helps it heal and stay healed.
Are compression stockings enough on their own?
For some people, compression controls symptoms well. When veins are leaking significantly or an ulcer keeps returning, a procedure may be advised as well. This is decided at your consultation.
